  1. Excellent example of a good representation in graphics, but with bad mechanics in data.

As you see from the key, you would expect someone to declare this a tie. 4 dark blues to 4 dark reds, and an even 20 light blues to light reds. But the key shows skew. 54 page views per person tops out the reds, while 194 page views per person tops out the blues. And, we have no idea where the breaks are (Assume 1/2 way for each category). We also do not determine in data on this chart how Republican states v. Democrat states break out. Is it by State lean fro the last Presidential election? Is is State Leadership at the Governor level (which I think is far more accurate, as Governors tend to skew state political leanings less than a Presidential election). Is it by State legislature majorities, or by a roll of the eligible voters by party? Each of these woudl produce a different result, and an interesting debate on how we divide people by beliefs or other false categories. Very “Us v. Them” exploration.

A better representational model would also provide a scale set by the highest page views per state. If 194 is the bar (wonder which state set that?), then we should divide by a set number (4 seems appropriate and divisible in one decimal numbers), and both sides should have 4 color bars at the 48.5, 97, 145.5, and 194 levels. More divisions make more of a case, but then the color scale becomes really complex.
